Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal picked up comfortable victories in their opening group matches of the ATP World Tour Finals, and neither will want to let go of their winning momentum when the two meet in London on Wednesday.

Murray was a comfortable winner over David Ferrer in the first match of the Ilie Nastasic Group at the O2 Arena on Monday, before Nadal eased past Stanislas Wawrinka later in the day.

Neither has won the ATP World Tour Finals title before, and with a player as strong as Wawrinka also in the same group, even if he looked out of sorts in his first match, both will know the importance of winning this match and virtually sealing their place in the semifinals.

While Wawrinka was far from his best, Nadal, yet again, showed signs of returning to his best, and the Spaniard was clearly satisfied after his 6-3, 6-2 win over the Swiss.

"I think I played a solid match," Nadal, who holds a 15-6 head-to-head record over Murray, told ATP's official website after the win. "I had one bad game, the first one of the match.

"But then immediately I was playing well. I played the way that I wanted to play. I played aggressive. I played with not many mistakes."

Murray was also impressive in his victory over Ferrer, and another win, in the final two matches of the group, will ensure the man from Great Britain finishes the year as the world number two.

"The first couple of games my timing was a little bit off," Murray said of his win over Ferrer. "But I got it back pretty quickly, which was pleasing. He's also a guy who makes you hit a lot of balls. The rallies are often quite long, so you can get into a rhythm against him. So that was good.

"He served a bunch of double-faults, which helped but I could have returned a bit better. The ball's coming through a little bit quicker and slightly lower than on the clay. That was the one thing I think I could have done better."
