Halloween fast approaches and its time to strike fear into yourself and others for reasons that – to be honest – have never been entirely clear to me. When it comes to video games, there is no shortage of horror experiences to try out this weekend, ahead of 31 October itself on Monday.

With the recently released PlayStation VR still in our thoughts we decided to subject a few willing participants from the IBTimes UK office to PSVRs three scariest horror games: Here They Lie, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and Kitchen.

Kitchen is the best known of the three. This free tech demo was first shown off in the summer of 2015, and turned out to be a precursor to big-budget horror sequel Resident Evil 7, which was announced in June.

Kitchen lasts only a few minutes, but is a great example of how engrossing and immersive virtual reality can be, thanks to its 360-degree visuals, 3D audio, head-tracking and motion controls.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a twisted on-rails carnival ride that starts out as simple, innocent target practice but soon replaces wooden targets and coconuts with messed-up clowns and men in pig masks coming at you with cleavers.

Developed by Supermassive Games, Rush of Blood is very, very different to the game its based on (also developed by Supermassive), which was a branching narrative thriller about player choice and spooky wendigos.

Here They Lie is an original property from Tangentlemen and Sony Santa Monica which is more about a slow build-up then the other two games on this list. Described as a psychological horror, the games description reads: Unimaginable horrors lurk around every corner, just out of sight, haunting and infecting your mind. Dare you go deeper down the rabbit hole and confront the meaning of your existence?
