Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona played out an entertaining "you score, and then I score" Champions League Group F encounter at the Parc des Princes, with the home team coming out triumphant by a 3-2 scoreline.

David Luiz, the defender who has been under tremendous scrutiny following his near £50 million move from Chelsea in the summer transfer window, was the man to give PSG the lead in the 10th minute, before Lionel Messi answered back in kind a couple of minutes later.

However, PSG would restore their lead four minutes before the half hour via a Marco Verratti header, before Blaise Matuidi made it only the third goal that Barcelona have conceded all season in the 54th minute.

Neymar, who has been in splendid form, along with Messi, in their previously unbeaten start to the season, made it 3-2 two minutes later, but PSG, in front of their home fans, would not be denied the victory.

It was a particularly momentous night for Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez, who came on for Ivan Rakitic in the second half, to become break the appearance record in the Champions League.

The game against PSG was his 143rd appearance in the Champions League, with it going past Real Madrid legend Raul, who was the joint record holder along with the Barcelona ace.

However, even Xavi, who has set many a Champions League night alight with his wonderful passing and vision, could not find the inspiration necessary to at least pick up a point from Paris, as PSG held on for a big win and top spot in Group F, after Ajax could only manage a 1-1 draw against APOEL.

"Everyone gave everything tonight," Luiz told UEFA's official website after the win on Tuesday. "This game came at the right moment. This was the real Paris and I'm happy about that.

"It's great to win against a big club, and we've got our first win of the group. The fans created a great atmosphere – I'd like to say thank you, this victory was for them."

The win was all the more impressive as it came without their talisman and former Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who could not feature due to a heel injury.

"This win leaves me with a lot of satisfaction," PSG manager Laurent Blanc said. "We had little time to prepare for this match and we've had a slow start to the season, but we worked a lot. I told the players we would need to pull off a great collective performance.

"We needed a match like this one to rediscover the values which contributed to our successes last season. Tonight, we found again a very good Paris team."
