Chelsea maintained their top position in the Premier League following a 2-0 win over Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

An early strike from Eden Hazard coupled with a second half goal from Diego Costa proved enough as the Tigers did not prove to be much of a threat to the Blues defence, failing to muster a single effort on target.

Hazard, who returned to the squad after being rested against Sporting Lisbon, gave the Blues an early lead as he powered a header past Allan McGregor after being out with a perfect cross by Oscar in the 7th minute.

Three minutes later Hull City were dealt another blow as Michael Dawson was forced off the pitch with a suspected hamstring injury.

The Tigers, who struggled to keep position in the game, got their first real chance in the 20th minute, following a quick counter after John Obi Mikel surrendered possession in the middle of the park.

The ball finally reached Sone Aluko, but the 25-year-old Nigerian wasted the chance as his effort sailed over the crossbar.

Although the Tigers did manage to contain the hosts, limiting their attacking opportunities, Chelsea looked comfortable defending their 1-0 lead as Hull did prove to be much of a threat in the Blues defensive third.

Hull started being a little more positive after the break as Jake Livermore, following a good attacking move, just dragged his effort wide of the post in the 52nd minute.

Just as things were looking better for the Tigers, Tom Huddlestone was shown a straight red card following a poor challenge on left-back Filipe Luis.

A couple of minutes later, Chelsea players began appealing for a penalty after James Chester seemed to handle the ball in the box, but the referee ignored their pleas and signalled for play to continue.

Finally the Blues made most of their numerical advantage as they doubled their lead in the 68th minute through Costa, who fired home and put the game to bed after picked out by Hazard with a well worked through ball.

The Tigers did try to put some pressure on the Chelsea defence towards the end of the game, but the Blues manage to successfully defend their lead and the game eventually ended with a 2-0 scoreline.
