"Vedalam" has grossed Rs 15.5 crore (approximately) on the first day in Tamil Nadu. Trade tracker Sreedhar Pillai confirmed the news and posted, "#Vedalam TN - Gross (tax free), Diwali Day - 10 Nov - Rs 15.5 Cr (approximate). A new record for a day 1."

It means "Vedalam" has beaten the records of Rajinikanth's "Lingaa", which had earned Rs 12.8 crore, and Vijay's "Kaththi", which could only earn Rs 12.5 crore on the first day. The wide release for the Ajith starrer has helped the movie to make such a huge business in the state, say traders. The Tamil film has been released in 520+ screens in Tamil Nadu.

It has to be noted that the early estimation had indicated that "Vedalam" would make somewhere between Rs 14.5 crore and Rs 16 crore in Tamil Nadu.  Now, people are curious to know the entire worldwide collection of the movie and it is yet to be revealed.

The traders say that "Vedalam" has performed well despite facing competition from Kamal Haasan's "Thoongavaanam", which was released in about 800 screens worldwide.

Meanwhile, "Vedalam" has got mixed reviews from the critics with many calling it as a regular commercial entertainer. Nonetheless, the audience seem to have liked the movie as the emotional quotient is high in the flick.

"Vedalam" produced by AM Rathnam is expected to do well in the coming days due to the holiday weekend factor.
