Ajith starrer "Vedalam" is one of the biggest hits of 2015 at the box office, but the film has not been able to beat Vijay's "Kaththi" in two main centres.

"Vedalam" has failed to beat Vijay starrer "Kaththi" in Chennai and Malaysia, the two big centres that contribute huge amounts of money to the Tamil flicks.

In Chennai, "Vedalam" has earned Rs 6.56 crore by the end of its fifth weekend. The collection of the film slowed down in the past two weeks. The movie could have performed a lot better if the capital city of Tamil Nadu had not been affected by floods.

With "Thanga Magan" releasing big in the state on Friday, 16 December, It is not possible for "Vedalam" to surpass Vijay's "Kaththi" collection of Rs 7.83 crore.

In Malaysia, "Vedalam" has struggled to make Rs 3.75 crore and it requires another Rs 6 lakh to surpass the collection. But it is difficult for the Ajith starrer to attain that as it is now being shown in only one screen in the country.

However, it has to be noted that "Vedalam" has set a new benchmark at box office for the opening day collection by raking in Rs15.5 crore. It surpassed Rajinikanth's "Lingaa", which had earned Rs 12.8 crore, and Vijay's "Kaththi", which could only earn Rs 12.5 crore on the first day, to create new history in Kollywood box office.

"Vedalam" has performed well in not just Tamil Nadu, but also in Kerala and Karnataka. In the overseas centres, it has made decent collection in the US and UK apart from earning Ajith's career best in Malaysia.

The film, which has been made with a budget of Rs 61 crore, has Shruthi Haasan and Lakshmi Menon in the lead roles. Kabir Duhan Singh and Rahul Dev play the role of baddies.
