Ajith Kumar seems to be finally ready for the much-needed image makeover. If everything goes fine, his fans might get to see him in the avatar of a king!

Director Vishnuvardhan is the man who is interested to make a movie based on the life and times of Tamil King Raja Raja Cholan. He is doing a lot of research on the subject and visiting many temples that were under the rule of one of the biggest emperors of South India. The construction of the famous Thanjavur temple will be a main plot in the flick.

Ajith has been Vishnuvardhan's favourite hero and they had earlier collaborated in "Billa 2" and "Arrambam". Therefore, it is not surprising to hear that the director wants his tried-and-tested hero for his most ambitious project.

Ajith has been typecast andis long due for a image change. The historical subject might be tailor-made for him at this stage. But this is not the first time where he would be enacting such a role.

Earlier, Ajith was part of Bollywood movie "Asoka" starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor. He had played the negative role of Susima Maurya in the Santhosh Sivan directorial flick.

Coming back to Raja Raja Cholan, the legendary Tamil actor Sivaji Ganesan had won the hearts of Tamil audience with his performance in the role of the king. If Ajith can pull off a similar performance, it will be a milestone in his career.

However, such projects are not easy to make. Firstly, historical movies demand huge budgets and lots of research. Even actors have to spend huge time preparing for their roles. This is for the same reason veteran why Mani Ratnam put his historical "Ponniyin Selvan", which was supposed to feature Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Mahesh Babu, Arya and Mahesh Babu in the lead roles, on the backburner.
