After a major fire late Monday at biotechnology firm Biocon's contract research wing Syngene International, the company is in the process of conducting an internal assessment of the possible losses due to the incident.

A fire broke out at a lab of Syngene International in Bengaluru after office hours on Monday, which was subsequently brought under control with the help of fire tenders.

"This is to inform that there has been an incident of fire at the Syngene campus, Jigani Link road, which has been brought under control with the assistance of local authorities. Preliminary reports indicate no one was injured in the incident and there has been no loss of life. Syngene has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its employees," Syngene said in a statement.

Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw had earlier tweeted that one of the nine labs of Syngene had caught fire, damaging labs and equipment.

Commenting on the incident, a spokesperson of Syngene International told International Business Times, India that it would be a bit too early to talk about the estimated losses.

"Our internal assessment has started to gauge the impact of the fire on the facility," he said, adding that most of the facility is insured and the company didn't see any major impact of the fire in financial terms. The spokesperson also said that the company was assessing the impact on the facility in operational terms.

Syngene International, the contract research arm of Biocon, has seen a lot of business traction in recent years. Earlier, the chairperson of Biocon had said that the company would definitely deliver double-digit growth and maintain its leadership in research services field in coming years.
