Augmented reality (AR) experience may not be the same anymore if South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics has its way. The company has filed a patent for smart contact lenses that will be equipped with an inbuilt camera, an antenna and sensors.

The patent application (via SamMobile) filed in South Korea has been granted. It says the smart contact lens can detect movements with inputs as simple as blinking of the eyes. The lens display projects images directly into the eyes of the wearer, which helps give a better AR experience than exiting wearables like Google Glass.

"It is disclosed about the smart contact lens for the augmented reality and manufacture and operation method. The disclosed smart contact lens comprises the display unit it is arranged on the first contact lens of the display unit, placed in the center of the first contact lens, and the first contact lens and display unit circumference, the connected peripheral device, and display unit, and the protective film covering the peripheral device, [sic]" stated the patent.

"The disclosed manufacturing method comprises the display unit in the display unit circumference on the process forming the display unit, and process mounted on the center of the first contact lens the display unit, and the first contact lens, the display unit on the process forming the connected peripheral device, and the first contact lens, and the process forming the protective film covering the peripheral device, [sic]" it added.

Samsung filed the patent in September 2014, so, it won't come as a surprise if the company has started working on its ambitious smart contact lens. Interestingly, search giant Google was also granted patent on smart contact lenses in the United States in 2014.
