The remake of films from the south has been a trend of sorts for the last few years in Bollywood. The success of several remakes has led Hindi filmmakers to continue with the pattern. This year too quite a few films from the south were remade in Bollywood and some of them performed exceptionally well at the box office.

From Salman Khan's "Kick" to Akshay Kumar's "Holiday - A Soldier is Never Off Duty," here is how south remakes have performed at the box office.

Kick

Salman Khan's "Kick" is the highest grossing film of 2014 at the domestic box office. The film, which is a remake of the Telugu flick of the same name, did fantastic business worldwide. The Salman-starrer turned out to be a huge hit and minted Rs 233 crore in India, while its collections from overseas markets stood at ₹Rs 67.58 crore. The film registered worldwide collections of ₹Rs 377 crore, according to Koimoi.

Following the stupendous success of "Kick," there are reports that the makers are planning for the film's sequel. Salman has a few projects including Kabir Khan's "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo," and Karan Johar's "Shuddhi." On the other hand, "Kick" director Sajid Nadiadwala is busy with the production house. Even if the "Kick" sequel goes ahead, it is expected to hit the floors only after the actor-director duo completes its current assignments.

Jai Ho

This Salman Khan-starrer is also a remake of a south film titled "Stalin." "Jai Ho" did decent business and managed to cross the ₹100-crore mark at the domestic box office. The film has minted ₹Rs 111 crore in India.

"Jai Ho" carried huge expectations prior to its release, but the film failed to live up to the hype. The action drama directed by Sohail Khan received mixed reviews from the critics and audience alike. It was expected to enter the ₹200-crore club but failed to do so.

Heropanti

Tiger Shroff's debut film "Heropanti" is a remake of Telugu film "Parugu." While the Telugu version did decent business, "Heropanti" turned out to be a hit by minting ₹Rs 55 crore at the Indian box office.

Main Tera Hero

Varun Dhawan's "Main Tera Hero" is a remake of Telegu film "Kandireega." Post the success of "Student of the Year", there were big expectations of "Main Tera Hero." The film fared well at the box office and minted Rs₹55 crore.

Pizza - 3D

"Pizza – 3D" is the remake of the Tamil film of the same name. The Tamil version, which hit the screens in 2011, was critically acclaimed and commercially successful. The Hindi remake was also expected to perform well. However, the film failed to set the cash registers ringing and managed to mint only Rs 4.35 crore in lifetime collections.

Holiday - A Soldier is Never Off Duty

Akshay Kumar's "Holiday" is a remake of the Tamil film "Thuppakki," starring Vijay. The Hindi version was directed by AR Murugadoss who also directed the Tamil version. "Thuppkki," which released in 2012, minted more than Rs 100 crore at the worldwide box office.

"Holiday" also crossed the ₹100-crore mark, thus becoming Murugadoss's second film to achieve the feat. The action-entertainer emerged as a hit by raking in Rs 112.65 crore in India.

Badlapur Boys

Recently-released "Badlapur Boys" is a remake of Tamil hit film "Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu." The Hindi version which hit theatres on 12 December, managed to mint Rs 14 lakh on the opening day at the India box office, according to Bollywood Hungama.

"Badlapur Boys" has managed to receive only average reviews from the critics. The film mostly has newcomers playing pivotal roles and is unlikely to witness growth in its business in the coming days. With Aamir's "PK" hitting screens on 19 December, there will not be a good chance for "Badlapur Boys" to do well at the box office.
