RIP Jayalalithaa! This and more such tributes have been pouring in for former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaraman, who breathed her last at 11:30 pm on Monday, December 5. Many celebrities and politicians throughout the country have been showering respect, calling her one of the most powerful women leaders.

In order to mark its respect for Jayalalithaa, fondly called Amma and Puratchi Thalaivi, the Kerala government has declared that government offices and educational institutions in the state will remain shut on Tuesday. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan announced the news via his official Facebook page on Tuesday morning.

"Kerala Government has declared today (6.12.2016) as a holiday for public offices and professional colleges to pay tribute to late former Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa," according to the social media post [translated from Malayalam] of Pinarayi.

Meanwhile, celebrities and politicians in the state, including Mohanlal, Dulquer Salmaan, Nivin Pauly, Ramesh Chennithala, Manju Warrier, Jayaram, Navya Nair, Aju Varghese, Meera Nandan, Ranjini, Ananyaa, Gopi Sunder, Roopesh Peethambaran, Kalidas Jayaram, Pratap Pothen, Ashwin Kumar, Anupama Parameshwaran, Krishna Prabha, Arya, Madhu Warrier, have also expressed deep condolences.

J. Jayalalitha. She was only 16 years old when she starred opposite M.G.R in Ayirathil Oruvan. The entire cast & crew would stand up every time the veteran actor walked in, but the Church Park educated, English speaking matriculation state-first Jayalalithaa sat there with her legs crossed, reading her book. It was this audacity that went on to define the rest of her political career. She was well read and witty, she was intelligent and she knew it. She was a white skinned Brahmin in a party that thrived on anti-class rhetoric. Above all, she was a woman trying to ascend to power in 1980s in Tamilnadu. An unmarried, childless woman. In 1989, when she opposed Karunanidhi's presentation of the budget, she was almost disrobed in the legislature. This was in addition to being the recipient of lewd comments and hair pulling. This is probably the highest documented insult that a woman has ever faced in a parliament. Yet she persisted. She came out of that incident more guarded than ever before. She wrapped herself in layers of clothing and stopped wearing any jewelry at all. She succeeded at 'desexualizing' herself and branded herself as 'amma' (mother), the only known way to gain respect in that highly testosterone filled TN environment. Everyone knows her as the person who silences opposition and who creates sycophants who fall at her feet and worship her. This might be the only possible way she could command, consolidate and hold on to the otherwise elusive power. If she was to be any more cordial than this, she might have as well been an airhostess. May her soul in peace .
