The popularity race for consoles does not end. Currently, Microsoft has an edge over Sony as it has already released an update in the New Xbox One Experience that allows owners of the console to access Xbox 360 games as part of its new backwards compatibility. But where is Sony's PS4 in the race? Why haven't we heard much from Sony on this front?

Well, the company might be behind the race to get backwards compatibility into its PS4, but Wired UK reported that Sony could have secretly introduced PS2 backwards compatibility in PS4.

Sony had previously revealed, in celebration of the release of Star Wars Battlefront video game, that it would be coming out with a limited range of some of the classic titles from both PS1 and PS2 Star Wars games. The assumption has been that these are ports or standalone games and not the originals.

It was noticed by some people that the games were running on software versions of old console. It was also observed the game's controls were mapped to the Dual Shock 4 gamepad and an emulated version of the PS2 memory card was also there. The PS3 logo appeared when they booted the game with the scaled up old 2D artwork, said Eurogamer.

Sony would want its PS4 users to move beyond a limited list of games for backwards compatibility and have gaming titles from PS1, PS2 and PS3.

Meanwhile, Sony has confirmed that it is working on PS2 emulation to PS4, similar to what Microsoft did in Xbox One backwards compatibility.

"We are working on utilising PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time," Sony told Wired.

Some of the first games that could be added to this limited collection could be Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

The report goes on to explain these emulators. "Emulators mimic the environment of a specific computing environment, in this case the environment of the PlayStation 2 console. This allows PS2 games to run on the PS4 as if they were on their native machine, but in higher resolution in some cases."

Since PS2 was one of the most popular gaming platforms and consisted of some original classics like God of War, Gran Turismo 3 and so on, getting this on PS4 will boost the game library.

But many wonder why Sony has released the PS2 games in such low-key fashion.
