Kamal Hassan starrer "Papanasam" may have got off to a flying start at the Chennai box office, but the movie has failed to beat the record of Ajith starrer "Yennai Arindhaal" and Vikram's "I".

The Tamil movie was released on 3 July and had 273 shows in Chennai, according to Behindwoods.

"Papanasam" earned ₹1.34 crore in three days in its first weekend, considered a grand opening.

However, "Papanasam" could not surpass the business done by Ajith's "Yennai Arindhaal" and Vikram starrer "I", which earned ₹2.17 crore from four-day weekend and ₹3.83 crore five-day weekend, respectively.

Even Suriya's recent release "Massu" had made about ₹1.84 crore.

But the latest film has beaten the record of Kamal Hassan's earlier film "Uttam Villain", which earned ₹85 lakh in two days.

Many of the movies mentioned above slowed down post the first weekend, either due to negative reviews or mixed talk.

In case of "Papanasam", the movie has garnered highly positive reviews and this is expected to work for the movie in the coming days.

Traders believe that "Papanasam" will remain in theatres for long as it has won the hearts of the family audience.

The storyline and the performance of the leading actors have been appreciated by critics and the audience. The movie is expected to break the lifetime business of "Yennai Arindhaal", "I" and "Massu".

"Papanasam" is the Tamil remake of Malayalam hit film "Drishyam". It tells the story of an ordinary man, who fights hard to save his family's honour when an expected trouble hits them. It has Gauthami in the female lead role and has been directed by Jeetu Joseph, the creator of the original.

Meanwhile, early predictions by traders suggest "Papanasam" has done well in Tamil Nadu. The exact figures are not available, but it is believed the move has earned about ₹16 crore.
