Overseas box office collection: 'Kanche' continues to rock, 'Sher' opens to poor response

One-week-old Telugu movie "Kanche" continues to fare well at the overseas box office in its second week, while the new release "Sher" starring Kalyan Ram has opened to a dismal response.

Released in 130 theatres, "Kanche" collected $371,381 (Rs 2.41 crore) at the US box office in the first weekend. In its second week, its screen count was reduced to half by "Sher" and other new releases. The Varun Tej starrer collected $67,897 from 61 screens at the US box office in the second weekend, taking its 10-day collection to $4,89,701 (Rs 3.21 crore).

In its second weekend, "Kanche" has collected $892 from 2 screens at the Canada box office, taking its 10-day total to $9,261 (Rs 6.07 lakh). The movie has grossed MYR686 from 2 screens at the Malaysia box office and its 10-day total collection stands at MYR19,316 (Rs 2.95 lakh). The movie has collected $503461 (Rs 3.30 crore) at the overseas box office in 10 days.

"Sher" released in 60 cinema halls across the US and became the biggest release of Kalyan Ram, beating the record of his last outing "Pataas". Its huge hype, promotion and screen count made many think that it would start with a bang and halt the runaway success of "Kanche" and "Rudramadevi" at the box office.

But to everyone's surprise, "Sher" opened to a lukewarm response and the mixed word of mouth took its business down on the following days. The Kalyan Ram starrer collected $11,741 (Rs 7.70 lakh) from 59 screens at the US box office in the first weekend. Its business is nowhere close to the collection of "Pataas", which collected $105,848 (Rs 65.07 lakh) from 18 screens in its opening weekend.

The performance of "Sher" is poorer than the three and four-week-old releases such as "Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2" and "Rudramadevi". Here is a list of the top six performers at the US box office this weekend. The list is based on statistics reported by Bollywood Hungama.
