English actor Benedict Cumberbatch seemed to be in a playful mood during the Oscars night on Sunday.

The "Sherlock" actor photobombed U2 on the Oscars 2014 red carpet and with his fingers splayed and goofy expression, Cumberbatch managed to win the affection of thousands on Twitter.

The photo sees band members of U2 lining up during the photo op before their performance at the Oscars, and Cumberbatch is seen jumping up in the air behind them. The contrast in their expressions is interesting, as Cumberbatch sports a goofy one, other U2 members appear surly.

The picture has been doing the rounds on a number of social networking sites, and many feel that it was one of the best Oscars red carpet moment.

Cumberbatch is known to be uninhibited during award functions, and fans are hoping that the actor would indulge in more silly behaviour at the Oscars after-party.

At the Golden Globes early this year, Cumberbatch and his "12 Years a Slave" co-star Michael Fassbender got on the dance floor to shake a leg, and later at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, he was photographed making funny faces with Sarah Paulson.

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch also displayed his emotional side at the Academy Awards night, where he was spotted shedding a few tears when Lupita Nyong'o was delivering her acceptance speech after being awarded the Best Supporting Actress honor.

"It doesn't escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is due to so much pain in someone else's," Nyong'o said referring to the character she played in the movie, which is a real life story.

"When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that your dreams are valid. Thank you," she concluded before thanking her family, co-stars and the movie's director Steve McQueen.
