A sedition case has been filed against Bollywood actor Aamir Khan in the Kanpur sessions court, two days after he stated that there was increasing intolerance in the country and that his wife had discussed leaving the country.

Khan's remark had prompted angry protests on social media, and on Wednesday, Shiv Sena members in Lucknow conducted a 'mock funeral' of the actor.

On Tuesday, a filmmaker had filed a police complaint against the actor in Delhi accusing him of 'scaring people' with his remark.

"Celebrities should think about their status and duties before making such statements. If they can't help bring peace and prosperity in the nation, they shouldn't scare people by speaking about intolerance and other issues," the complainant had said.

Aamir Khan came under fire from the ruling BJP as well as right-wing parties such as the Shiv Sena over his statement at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism awards function on Monday.

"Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That's a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet," he said.

The sedition case against Khan was filed by lawyer Manoj Dikshit. The hearing will be held on 1 December, according to ANI news agency.
