A Nigerian man married for 25 years has been reportedly allowed by a Lagos court to divorce his wife for "repeatedly failing to serve him dinner on time".

Fifty-seven-year-old Olufade Adekoya told a Lagos court that he was furious with his wife as she has never served him dinner on time.

"There is no point in harbouring a wife that makes me [go] hungry... I am totally fed up," Adekoya told the court.

He added: "My wife had failed in her matrimonial obligations."

His wife Olusola, however, denied the allegations and told the court that her husband wanted to marry a younger woman, which is why he was making such accusations.

The Nigerian court nevertheless decided to grant a divorce to the couple. While passing the verdict, judge Olu Adebiyi said he was dissolving the unhappy union as "the court tried several times to reconcile their differences, but all efforts proved abortive", Nigerian daily Vanguard reported.

The daily, however, did not specify the date or month when the decision was pronounced by the court.

While this is a first incident where a Nigerian court has allowed a husband to divorce his wife for not serving food, there is no lack of such bizarre instances in the country.

In one incident, a 40-year-old man was allowed to divorce his wife after he complained to a Lagos court that his in-laws were troubling him for beating up his wife.

In 2008, a Nigerian pensioner was forced by the local Sharia clerics to divorce 82 of his 86 wives to avoid an eviction order passed by the local community.
