"New Girl" is currently on a hiatus following the season 4 finale. However, several months' wait for season 5 is going to be bittersweet considering the way Nick and Jess ended things between them.
Although the two relationships that definitely moved forward in the season 4 finale is that of Coach (Damon Wayans, Jr.) & Mae (Meaghan Rath) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) & Cece (Hannah Simone), the the storyline of Jess (Zooey Deschanel) & Nick (Jake Johnson) has also been revived in "Clean Break".
A cup that Nick and Jess used to leave outside as a secret message for each other to hook up was brought to the attention of the loft-dwellers and audiences. After a brief discussion, both Nick and Jess decided that they would not need it anymore.
However, both of them went back to look for it in the dumpster and were pleased when they thought the other had already saved it. It is clear that neither Nick nor Jess wants to completely break off what is left of the relationship.
