Blessed Mother Teresa, founder of the Catholic congregation 'Missionaries of Charity' will be  officially declared a saint in September 2016, Syro Malabar Church spokesperson Paul Thelekat said in Kochi on Monday, 18 May.

"As a Christian, I am eagerly waiting for the canonisation of Mother Teresa. She has been a mother to millions of Indian especially the poorest of the poor and the underprivileged," Thelekat told IANS.

Earlier, on 19 October 2003, Pope John Paul-II announced Mother Teresa as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta".

Born as Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Albania in 1910, she joined as a missionary with the Sisters of Loreto at the age of 18 and arrived in India in 1929. She began her charity work the same year she got Indian citizenship in 1948.

Mother Teresa received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Known all over the world for her charity work, she passed away on 5 September, 1997.
