Strap yourselves up for a ride on the runway again as Tom Cruise's Maverick is set to return. Confirming the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster, the Mission: Impossible 6 actor has confirmed that Top gun 2 has been cleared to take off.

After years of speculation, Cruise finally confirmed the news of Top Gun's return during an interview to Channel Seven's Sunrise.

When asked about the rumours regarding Top Gun sequel, MI6 star told, "It's true. Yeah, it's true. It's happening, it is definitely happening."

The Mummy actor also disclosed details about the filming schedule. "I'm going to start filming it, probably in the next year," the 54-year-old added.

All these years, Cruise was bombarded with the sequel questions. Last year, Top Gun celebrated 30 years of its release and the speculations of the sequel spread like wild fire. While there was no confirmation about the film last year, Cruise told Graham Norton late last year that there were discussions about a possible sequel happening but the ideas were still on the table and there were no concrete plans in place.

The idea of the sequel was teased again when Val Kilmer, who starred in the original movie alongside Cruise, was asked in an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit about reprising his role in Top Gun 2, if ever it was made, he replied, "Hell yes, and what a hoot it will be." The actor played the role of Iceman in the 1986 release.

With today's confirmation, fans are unable to contain their excitement. While the two stars are definitely a part of the cast, it remains to be seen who will join the sequel to form the new star cast of the film.

For those who haven't watched the movie, Top Gun sees Cruise play the role of pilot Maverick. Critics regard the movie as one of Cruise's career best performances.
