Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest car maker's small-car offering Alto has topped the list of world's best selling hatchbacks once again in 2014.

Emerging reports on the web suggests that despite slowdown in the sales last year, the best-selling car slot remains very much the place for Maruti's Alto. While Alto bagged the top place in the list, Volkswagen Golf of Germany and Daihatsu Tanto of Japan notched up the second and third place in the best-selling small-car list. Interestingly, Maruti Swift and Suzuki Wagon R have also found place in the list.

A Hindustan times report says that, in 2014, Maruti Suzuki Alto recorded sales of 2,64,544 units to beat the VW Golf, which sold 255,044 units. But taking note of Alto sales in the past, the sales declined every year since 2011. However, Alto hopes to gain ground in the coming months with its latest addition Alto K10 AMT.

Launched on 3 November, the Alto K10 facelift rivals Hyundai Eon 1.0 and Datsun Go in its segment in India. Offered in a total of six variants - LX, LXi, VXi, VXi (O), VXi (AMT) and LXi (CNG), the new Alto K10 AMT packs the 1.0-litre three-cylinder K-Series engine, which is tuned to churn out 1.0-litre three-cylinder K-series engine.

Other cars like Daihatsu Tanto, Toyota Aqua and Honda Fit in Japan made it to the list of top five best selling cars with the sales figure of 2,34,456 units, 2,33,209 units and 2,02,838 units respectively.
