Manchester United and Arsenal are set to go head to head for the signing of Hull City fullback Andy Robertson.

Robertson has made a wonderful start to life in the English Premier League, taking to the top flight in England like a "duck to water" after signing for Hull over the summer.

Those impressive performances have inevitably led to the Scotland international being linked with some of the biggest clubs in England with Manchester United and Arsenal thought to be keen on making a January move for the £12 million-rated 20-year-old defender, according to the Daily Express.

A left-back, though, is not necessarily the position that Van Gaal needs to strengthen, considering they already have a young fullback in Luke Shaw, with Marcos Rojo and Tyler Blackett also able to cover in that position, which does put a potential move in doubt.

Even Arsenal do not necessarily need a left-back for their defence at the moment, with Kieran Gibbs the first choice and Nacho Monreal his backup. What Arsene Wenger requires is a centre-back, and Robertson might not be the answer to that particular problem in the January transfer window.

However, Hull City manager Steve Bruce has no doubts that Robertson, who switched to Hull City for just £3 million from Dundee United earlier this summer, is destined for great things, revealing he has received plenty of interest from clubs for the youngster.

"There has already been one or two with phone calls asking 'to keep me informed'. That's always the first stage," said Bruce to the Sunday People.

"I had it with [Wilson] Palacios when I was at Wigan and then [Antonio] Valencia when he went off to Man Utd. And if this kid keeps performing the way he is then it might become inevitable."

Robertson has not only impressed for Hull City in the Premier League, but also for Scotland.

"I spoke to [Scotland manager] Gordon [Strachan] about him in the summer," added Bruce. "He threw him in against Nigeria for his first cap.

"He took to it like a duck to water, and he has done exactly the same when offered the challenge with us."
