Roma have reportedly informed Manchester United that they will need to fork out £60 million if they want to land Kevin Strootman in January.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal, who has worked with Strootman in the Dutch national team, had been looking to sign the 24-year-old this summer, but the transfer did not go through as Roma were reluctant to sell their star midfielder.

While Roma manager Rudi Garcia had earlier stated that Strootman would only be allowed to leave for €100 million (£79million), the Italian side's sporting director Walter Sabatini later insisted that the Dutchman would not be available at any price.

However, now the Mirror claims that Roma are willing to settle for a transfer fee of £60 million for Strootman, who is currently still recovering from a knee injury that ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup.

Strootman, who is believed interested in teaming up with his van Gaal at Old Trafford, has reportedly sacked his agent and hired Robin van Persie's representative Kees Vos in an attempt to engineer his move to Manchester United.

According to ESPN, Strootman wants Vos to persuade Roma president James Pallotta to further decrease his £60 million asking price so that United will be more encouraged to make a move.

However, his attempts could prove to be futile as Roma, after seeing Manchester United splash out more than £150m in transfers this summer, know that the Red Devils are capable of paying the big bucks.

Meanwhile, defender Jonny Evans could be ruled out for many weeks after sustaining an ankle injury during Manchester United's shock 5-3 Premier League loss at Leicester City on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman, who was forced off the pitch at the half hour mark, had a protective boot around his right leg, and was seen in crutches after the match.

Van Gaal later revealed in his post match conference that the seriousness of Evan's injury can only be determined after a scan.

"I don't know how bad Evans is," the boss revealed. "We have to wait for a scan tomorrow but he is on crutches."

United will also be without Tyler Blackett in the next game as the young defender was sent off at Leicester City.

However, van Gaal says that he is not concerned by the absentees ahead of United's next Premier League fixture against West Ham United this coming weekend.

"I think that Shaw shall be fit enough to play," he told MUTV "Rojo can play and Smalling can play, so we can manage. But it's a thin choice."
