Liverpool are ready to swoop in and complete a transfer for winger Ashley Young, if his contract issue with Manchester United continues.

Young is keen on staying at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future, but is yet to agree upon a new deal with the club, with just a year remaining on his current contract.

That has caught the interest of the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle United, with Liverpool also joining the queue, according to the Daily Star.

Young, last week, had insisted he sees his future with Manchester United, but admitted the ball was in the club's court as far as a contract extension was concerned.

"I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world so I want to stay here as long as possible," Young said. "That's exactly what I want to do.

"I think a lot of people thought I had it done [a new contract] but I haven't. It's in the club's hands now so I will have to see how it goes.

"I hope we can sort things out. There have been preliminary talks so I am just looking to go out on the pitch and leave my agent to take care of that.

"I was delighted with how things went last season but that was last season. This is a new season and I have to take the confidence that I had and build on it again. I hope it'll go as well as last year."

Young was pretty impressive last season, keeping out Angel Di Maria from the starting lineup with some good displays on the right wing.

Van Gaal has kept the faith in Young in preseason as well, with Memphis Depay playing in the No.10 role behind Wayne Rooney.

However, with Pedro Rodriguez reportedly closing in on a move to Manchester United, and with Van Gaal keen on changing the formation from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3, Young could find his chances in the starting XI diminished.

That might prompt a move out of Old Trafford, and Liverpool are ready to pay Manchester United £8million for his services.
