Liverpool are said to be interested in acquiring the services of Gonzalo Higuain from Serie A giants Napoli.

Liverpool, despite possessing a number of strikers in their line-up are on the look-out of a proven striker, who could drill in the goals, which the present strikers have not been able to do so.

Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli were roped in during the summer after the team decided to sell their last season hero Luis Suarez to Barcelona. Neither of the strikers have impressed the manager nor the fans alike, hence inviting criticism.

Luis Suarez's partner last season, Daniel Sturridge has been sidelined with an injury, hence have not been able to help the team solve their problems in front of goal, while another striker, Fabio Borini has been hapless, in spite of being given chances to prove his worth.

With none of the strikers doing their job well, Brendan Rodgers has been forced to look elsewhere to sign a striker during the January transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers is so desperate for goals that he has played Raheem Sterling as the false number nine.

The Reds are close to signing the prolific South American striker, Gonzalo Higuain for around £30 million, reported The Independent.

Liverpool were initially thought to bid for the former Real Madrid striker during the summer, but the situation seems to have changed for Brendan Rodgers.

The Argentine striker would be an upgrade to the present bunch of strikers that the Reds possess.

If this deal transpires, it could even open the door for Balotelli's exit, who has not only attracted interest from Greece side, Olympiakos, but also the Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint Germain.

The deal just might happen as well with PSG's two premier forwards, Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi attracting interest from a whole range of clubs.

The report further stated Liverpool's chances of signing Higuain has increased after former Liverpool boss, Rafa Benitez decided to sign another striker, Manolo Gabbiadini from Sampdoria.

Higuain could be a perfect fit for Liverpool. The club signed a number of players during the summer, but hardly anyone in the bracket of proven world class players.

The Argentine signed for Napoli from Real Madrid, where he enjoyed a successful spell with the club before moving to the Serie A in 2013. The player has proven his class in both the Serie A as well as the La Liga, scoring a number of goals.

With the quality the player possesses, there is no reason as to why would the player not be an instant success in one of the most physical and popular leagues around the world, English Premier League.
