The Indian censor board didn't support Konkana Sen Sharma's Lipstick Under My Burkha movie, but it has received appreciation internationally. The actress has now won the Best Actress award for the movie at the New York Indian Film Festival.

Konkona, who made her comeback in movies with Sonakshi Sinha's Akira, has been named the best director for her directorial debut, A Death in the Gunj and the best actress for Lipstick Under My Burkha at New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2017.

"#NYIFF2017 Awards Winner Best Director is Konkona Sensharma @konkonas @chhabs @aroonshiv," the official account of NYIFF announced on Twitter.

While people around the world praised the movie, the censor board in India couldn't digest the content of the movie. It has not been released in the country yet. But, it is good news that Lipstick Under My Burkha garnered appreciation in the foreign countries.

People had blasted the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after they didn't certify director Alankrita Shrivastava's Lipstick Under My Burkha in India. However, chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani defended the ban and lashed out at the Bollywood celebs who supported the movie.

Nihalani had told DNA: "Have Sudhir Mishra, Farhan Akhtar and Kabir Khan seen Lipstick Under My Burkha? How can they jump into the controversy just because it is fashionable to support any film that talks about women's empowerment? How genuine is this film's feminism?"

He had added: "But the film shows these women doing unmentionable things. If some sections think this is a progressive behaviour, gender equality and women's empowerment then I pity the generations to come."
