We know the power of superstars in our society: Not many dare to speak against them or their work. But south Indian actress Parvathy, who is known for voicing her opinions on matters that concern her, recently broke that norm when she commented on the Malayalam movie Kasaba in which megastar Mammootty utters misogynistic dialogues.

After the actress' statements during the open forum at International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) made headlines, she was heavily criticised and mocked by the fans of the megastar.

While a section of celebrities have since then extended their support to Parvathy, many others claim it has nothing to do with Mammootty as he just portrayed the character the script was demanding.

Actress-director Geetu Mohandas, Sou Sadanandan, Rima Kallingal and a few other members of the Women in Cinema Collective — the association formed for the women in Mollywood industry — took to social media to comment on their opinion about the controversy.

But what exactly did Parvathy say?

"Kasaba is a movie that I unfortunately watched. With all respect to all the technicians who worked in the film, I was definitely disappointed to watch an actor, who happened to say certain dialogues, which were not only derogatory, but most saddening," she said.

Many believe cinema is something that reflects in the life of many, yes, it is right. But the line we draw is when we glorify it or we don't glorify it. So when the hero says, its obviously glorified. So it gives the licence for many other men to do the same thing because it's so sexy and so cool," said the actress.

How did Nithin Renji Panicker, director of Kasaba, react?

"Why are they discussing about a movie released one year ago? Everybody knows that it is an attempt to gain more publicity. I am not doing to react on the matter. Just like many others, I too believe the actress' statements do not deserve an answer [translated from Malayalam]," reads the statement Nithin posted on the Facebook page of Kasaba, the movie.
