Two Americans were among the five people shot dead by a Jordanian police officer who went on a shooting spree inside a US-funded training facility on Monday, a security source has told Reuters.

A South African trainer and two Jordanians were also killed in the attack, according to Reuters. Two Americans and four Jordanians sustained injures in the shooting incident, a Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammed Momani told state news agency Petra.

According to iTV, the gunman - who was a senior co-trainer at the King Abdullah training camp - was later shot dead by the security forces.

An official told Reuters that the Americans were personnel from US State Department's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Bureau and they were in Jordan to train Palestinian security forces.

The King Abdullah training camp, commonly referred by its acronym JIPTC for Jordan International Police Training Centre, trains US-allied security forces not only for Jordan but also for Iraq, Lebanon and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

While most of the staff at JIPTC are Jordanians, the facility has military trainers and police officers from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US , besides from private contractors like DynCorp.

More details awaited.
