Manchester United emerged victorious in the finals of the International Cup after coming from behind to register a 3-1 win over Premier League rivals Liverpool at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.

Steven Gerrard's first-half penalty did not prove to be enough as strikes from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard delivered the Red Devils first piece of silverware under new boss Louis van Gaal.

The Reds broke the deadlock through a penalty in the 14th minute when Phil Jones brought down Gerrard in the box. The Liverpool captain stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past David de Gea.

Following the lead, the Merseyside club continued dominating as Philippe Coutinho forced a brilliant low save from de Gea ten minutes later after collecting a pass from Rickie Lambert.

With only a couple of minutes remaining in the first half, Sterling got a chance to double his side's lead, but the youngster's meek effort was easily saved by de Gea.

After the break, Liverpool continued causing problems to the Red Devils defence as Gerrard, after nicking the ball off Ander Herrera found Lambert in a very good position. However, the England striker's effort lacked venom and de Gea easily made the save.

A couple of minutes later, Coutinho, after dribbling his way past Herrera, sent an excellent ball towards Sterling. However, in the end the winger's effort took a deflection and went out for a corner.

Despite the Reds continued attacks in the second half, it was Manchester United who found the leveller through their captain Wayne Rooney in the 57th minute. Hernandez whipped a cross towards the Rooney at the far post, and the England striker did brilliantly as he volley the ball across Simon Mignolet.

Before Liverpool could recover from the Rooney goal, Manchester United went ahead through a strike from Juan Mata after only a couple of minutes. A series of net inter passing saw the ball reach Mata, who found the nets with an excellent strike from the edge of the box.

In the 65th minute, Manchester United thought they had doubled their lead through Rooney, but the striker's goal was ruled out by the referee.

A high cross from Young rebounded off the crossbar towards Rooney, who slotted the ball into an empty net. However, the goal was disallowed after replays showed that the ball had been already out of play when it hit the goal frame.

However, the Red Devils did get their third in the dying minutes of the game through Lingard. Although Kagawa could not control Young's low cross from the right, the ball fell to Lingard and the youngster fired the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
