India and the West Indies will need to wait longer to renew their ODI series battle, after the third ODI was cancelled by the BCCI due to Cyclone Hudhud.
Visakhapatnam was the venue for the crucial third one-day international between the two teams, but with the cyclone wreaking havoc in the city on Sunday, the inevitable result was zero chance of play being possible on the schedule date of 14 October.
"Due to extreme weather conditions, the BCCI has had to cancel the ODI," BCCI joint secretary Anurag Thakur confirmed to ESPNCricinfo. "It is disappointing but we cannot overcome natural calamities
"Even though the host association was hopeful of staging the match if weather cleared, the BCCI didn't want to take any risk."
Both the India and West Indies players had stayed back in Delhi, instead of travelling to Visakhapatnam after the second ODI, which India won to level the series at 1-1, on Saturday.
After the cyclone hit the city, all flights and trains were cancelled, rendering it impossible for anyone concerned with the match to get to the venue.
While the option of postponing the match to Wednesday, 15 October could have been considered, the BCCI decided to cancel the match, knowing full well the impact the cyclone has made on Visakhapatnam.
Holding the match in Delhi, the venue for the second one-dayer, is also not a viable option as the board will not be able to organise such a match in such short notice.
The fourth ODI is scheduled to take place in Dharamsala on Friday, 17 October.
