Google Gives 2GB Of Free Space On Drive For Securing Your Own Account: Here's How
Complete Google's Security Check And Get 2GB Free Drive Space For LifeGoogle Drive Blog

Google is looking to make the internet safer and protect its users from online threats. On the occasion of Safer Internet Day, Google is offering free 2GB Drive storage for those who perform a quick security checkup of their online account.

The additional storage doesn't come with an expiry date and will be valid for life. But to avail the offer, users must do as Google says by 17 February.

"While everything stored in Drive is always encrypted in transit and at rest in Google's custom-built data centers, this checkup ensures you're making the most of the 24/7 protection you already get from Google. As our way of saying thanks for completing the checkup by 17 February 2015, we'll give you a permanent 2 gigabyte bump in your Google Drive storage plan," Google Drive product manager, Alex Vogenthaler wrote in a blog.

Get Started

The process of performing a security checkup takes less than 2 minutes. Users must simply review the information provided to Google in order to secure the account. The security check is divided into four parts as mentioned below:

  • Ensure your account has the correct recovery information via phone and email.
  • Recent login activities must be verified by the user and if anything is suspicious click on "Something looks wrong." Google will then suggest you to change your account password.
  • Verify the apps, websites and devices connected to your Google account. User can also remove suspicious ones.
  • Finally, set up two-factor verification if not done until now. Simply click Done if all details are accurate.

After verifying all the details, users will see four green check marks. This confirms the user is eligible for the free storage promised by Google and not to mention the security of your own account. The free storage will be given to all users around February 28 and a confirmation email will be sent to users after the adjustment.

Google already offers unlimited storage for Google Apps for Work and Education so the additional storage offer is not applicable to those accounts. But Google insists the security check be done to protect your information.
