After being part of a romantic-comedies, Udhayanidhi Stalin surprisingly moved on to crime-thriller "Gethu", which is written and directed by Thiru Kumaran of "Maan Karate" fame. The movie has Amy Jackson in the female lead role and Sathyaraj has a powerful character in the flick.

Udhayanidhi Stalin has decided to go for a image makeover with "Gethu". All his three films as hero were light-hearted entertainers and he was not the selling point and Santhanam was the backbone. With his latest film, he has not only ventured into serious films but also trying to prove that he is taking acting career seriously.
Vikranth, who had won the hearts of the audience with his performance in Vishal starrer "Pandia Nadu", will be seen in the role of a villain in "Gethu". Amy Jackson plays Stalin's love interest and a good portion of the first half revolves around them. Sathyaraj plays the character of the hero's father with Karunas, Avinash, Anuradha and others doing the supporting roles.
Harris Jayaraj, who had composed music for all Udhayanidhi Stalin's films, has continued his succesful association, Sukumar has handled the cinematography and Dinesh Ponraj is the editor of "Gethu".
Story:
Udhayanidhi Stalin plays the role of a librarian named Sethu. His father played by Sathyaraj does not share good relationship with a wine shop owner. To everybody's surprise, the bar owner suspiciously dies and the cops arrest Sathyaraj in connection with the case. Now, the hero wants to prove his father's innocence and his mission leads to Bull (Vikranth), who aims to kill India's biggest scientist. The remaining part of the story is about how the Sethu fights the baddie to save his father.

The first action sequence performed by Udayanidhi almost received an applause at the theatre. Credit to the bgm as well.
But convey the point first. You can package sleek visuals later.

The unexciting script hits the skids and the sure-fire way of holding the attention of viewers backfires what could have been a competent thriller. Amy Jackson almost vanishes in the second half, like the major female lead characters in Tamil cinema, but turns up swiftly out of nowhere for songs and to lend her jewelry when the hero is in acute need for money. Sukumar's strong sense of visual pattern and Harris Jayaraj's occasionally good background score don't succeed in bundling up an engaging thriller.
