Football fans around the world eagerly wait for the transfer season and once the window opens, fans, players, managers, and club officials' anticipation and excitement reach the highest level.

The 2015 summer transfer window remained the most lucrative transfer season in the history of the Premier League. The Premier League clubs spent a total of £870m in the summer transfer window this year.

It is to be noted that the spending has not only been limited to cash-rich clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea, but small clubs like Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Stoke City have also done brisk business in the summer.

City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, however, have dominated all the headlines in this transfer season. Although there have been successes and failures, it has to be noted that the fans, the players, and the football lovers have enjoyed the transfer deals and rumours all summer.

According to BBC, on the final day of the transfer window, social media users took to Twitter to post their views using the hashtag #DeadlineDay on 296,543 occasions.

MANCHESTER CITY

The Citizens lived up to their billing once again as the highest spending club in the Premier League in recent times. Manuel Pellegrini's side splashed cash worth £104m on just two players this summer, among others.

Kevin De Bruyne became the biggest signing by a Premier League club this summer as City paid an astounding £55m to bag him from Wolfsburg. The Manchester outfit, only weeks ago, paid £49m to secure the signature of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.

The transfer window also saw the exit of players like Edin Dzeko, Alvaro Negredo, and Stevan Jovetic from Manchester City.

The Reds shelled out £32.5m to nab Aston Villa star striker Christian Benteke this summer, and just days ago, promising Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino was signed for £29m. 

There has been a mass exodus on the other hand, as players like Raheem Sterling, Lazar Markovic, and Ricky Lambert left Liverpool at the end of last season. Anfield legend Steven Gerrard also made his way out of the club after 17 years, to join MLS side LA Galaxy.

MANCHESTER UNITED

The Red Devils paid £36m to sign French youngster Anthony Martial on the transfer deadline day to make him the most-expensive teenage footballer in the world. Questions have been raised from many quarters as to why Louis van Gaal's side paid so much for a player who is yet to taste competitive football.

Dutch international Memphis Depay became the second-biggest signing of the club this summer at £27.9m, followed by Morgan Schneiderlin at £25m. Germany veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger has been roped in for £6.5m.

The list of players who headed out of Old Trafford this summer, however, remained a bigger highlight of the club. Robin van Persie, Adnan Januzaj, Radamel Falcao, all left the club, but the biggest has been the exit of Angel di Maria to PSG for £44.3m. The Argentine was only signed last summer for a record fee of £59.7m.
