Emma Stone has earned her first Oscar nomination since stepping in the film industry. The actress has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in "Birdman". The actress was reportedly surprised to hear her name announced.

"Well this is surreal. I am completely knocked out. Thank you to the Academy for this incredible honor. I am very proud and lucky to be part of Birdman and I can't believe it came to this. I am so f––ing excited. Are you allowed to say 'f––' when making a statement for the Oscars? I'm just really f––ing excited," she said in a statement, E Online reports.

Stone plays the role of Sam Thomson in the film. She is the daughter and personal assistant of Riggan Thomson, played by Michael Keaton, a washed-up artist who plans to resurrect his career by making inroads into Broadway. Andrew Garfield's girlfriend was highly praised for her performance and is the frontrunner for the Oscars. Some say that her nomination has not come as a surprise.

Other actresses, who have been nominated in the 2015 Academy Awards' Best Supporting Actress category, include Patricia Arquette for "Boyhood", Laura Dern for "Wild", Keira Knightley for "The Imitation Game" and Meryl Streep for "Into the Woods".

Stone is clearly up against some of the biggest names in the industry. Streep, who is an Oscar darling, is one of her toughest contenders. Moreover, Knightley's performance in "The Imitation Game" was immensely praised and she is a serious competition to Stone. Here is Knightley's reaction to the nomination:

"I'm so honoured and grateful for this nomination and to be in the company of such talented and inspiring actresses," she added. "Thank you to the Academy for this recognition and also for honouring so many of the film's storytellers. I would like to think the many recognitions the Academy has given our movie is a celebration of Alan Turing's legacy," reported ABC.

Winners of the Academy Awards 2015 will be declared on 22 February.
