A Delhi court on Tuesday charged the Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav for the offences of rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation of a 25-year-old woman passenger in December last year. This rape assault had created a nationwide hue and cry condemning the incident.

Yadav, 32, had allegedly raped the woman, an employee of a finance company in Gurgaon, on her way back home in North Delhi's Inderlok area from a dinner engagement.

Two days after the incident, Yadav was arrested in a joint operation by the police from his hometown Mathura.

The police had filed a charge sheet against him in 19 days, which included charges of rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation among other charges. The police in the charge sheet of the case mentioned 44 prosecution witnesses.

A trial on a day-to-day basis in the case has been ordered by the judge from 15 January.

Forensic evidence and the route map of the car, in which the offence took place, were relied on for the investigation of the case.

This case proved to be a major setback for Uber, which has attracted both bouquets and brickbats globally for its service provided through a ride-sharing smartphone app.
