Congress leader Ajay Maken, who led his party in the Delhi assembly polls, has owned up responsibility for his party's worst performance and quit.
"I believe I should take responsibility and therefore resign. I was face of the Congress campaign and haven't been able to win the seat which I contested in as well," he told reporters on Tuesday, according to NDTV.
The party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years at a stretch before losing in the 2013 assembly polls, was not expected to win more than five seats in any case, as predicted by pollsters and analysts.
The party had won 8 seats in the 2013 elections.
It contested all the 70 seats in the recently-held polls.
The Congress's defeat in the elections is immensely mortifying for Maken who does not share good relationship with party veteran and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit. It can be understood by the open attacks they have traded against each other on various occasions.
This defeat has led to many Congress workers shoting slogans "Priyanka lao, Congress bachao"
outside the party headquarters to rebuild the party.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi have contratulated Arvind Kejriwal and all the other members of The Aam Aadmi Party for their historic win in the polls.
