Rio 2016 Olympics women's tennis bronze medallist Petra Kvitova has been attacked at her home on Tuesday morning, apparently in a reported attack of burglary. The incident took place in Prostejov, Czech Republic.
Fortunately, the injuries to the 26-year-old are not life-threatening. Kvitova won the Wimbledon singles title twice -- in 2011 and in 2014.
"According to initial information, it was a random criminal act. It was not that someone would intentionally harm her," publicist of the tennis star Karel Tejkal was quoted as saying by Czech website Blesk. "She is injured and is under the care of doctors. Her injuries not life-threatening however."
Kvitova suffered possible tendon injuries on her left hand owing to the attack with a knife, which took place prior to 9 am, while she was having her breakfast. She was instantly attacked when she opened the door after hearing the bell. Althought she tried to defend, she was slashed in her left hand.
Frantisek Korinek, a spokesman from Prostejov police, mentioned: "Today before half past eight in the morning, a 26-year-old woman was attacked near Prostejov. The unidentified perpetrator broke into the apartment."
It was announced earlier in the day that Kvitova will be missing out on the Hopman Cup 2017 owing to a foot injury.
