Premature greying of hair is quite common nowadays. Hair turns white after a certain age because of the depletion of colour pigments in hair follicles. Greying of hair at a young age happens due to various reasons.

Here are the common reasons behind greying of hair:

Smoking

Smoking has been linked to hair-whitening in young men by researchers. A 2013 study reveals that smokers are more prone to getting grey hair than non-smokers.

Their chances of premature greying before the age of 30 are 2.5 times more than others. Hence, avoid smoking to reduce your chances of getting white hair at an early age.

Hair products and dyes

Hair dyes and products such as shampoos can play a major role in premature greying. These products can deplete the levels of melanin, which are natural pigments that provide hair its colour.

Also, hair products and dyes that bleach hair can result in it turning grey. Try using natural ingredients to treat you hair and refrain using too many hair products.

Genetics

According to a 2013 report by the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, premature greying of hair is majorly related to genetics and even ethnicity and race of the person.

This report revealed that the age of premature greying of hair differs from people of different races:

  • White people can start getting grey hair in their 20s
  • Asians can get grey hair when they are in their 25
  • African-Americans can get white hair in their 30s

Excess stress

Excess stress can trigger premature greying of hair. A study carried out by the New York University found cells responsible for the hair colour can be reduced if the body is under stress, Medical News Today revealed.

Try staying relaxed by doing whatever keeps you stress-free.

Deficiency of vitamins and nutrition

Premature greying of hair is caused due to lack of vitamins like B-6, B-12, vitamin D, biotin and vitamin E.

A 2015 report from the journal Development reveals that deficiency of copper, vitamin B-12 and vitamin D-3 is linked to greying of hair. The pigmentation in the hair follicles is affected by the lack of nutrition. The report advises consumption of vitamin supplements.

Another study from the International Journal of Trichology in 2016 analysed what causes premature greying in Indians below 25 years of age. The cause was found to be deficiency of vitamin B-12, good cholesterol and the serum ferritin — a universal intracellular protein that stores iron and secretes it in a controlled fashion.

Lack of antioxidants

Deficiency of antioxidants in the body results in oxidative stress, which leads to ageing, premature greying of hair and also makes the body more prone to diseases such as cancer.

Ailment like vitiligo are also caused due to excessive oxidative stress which leads to hair whitening caused by loss of cell function and death of melanin cells.

Eating fruits and vegetables of different colours is advised to keep oxidative stress at bay.
