After creating a lot of buzz, Tom Cruise's upcoming film The Mummy is finally out in cinemas, though it did not have a worldwide release. The movie had a  limited release on June 6 in South Korea, and it grossed $6.6 million (kw 7.3 billion) on its opening day.

With this whopping amount, the movie has broken all the previous records of opening day box office collections in South Korea. The Mummy has surpassed last year's record of South Korean zombie apocalypse movie, Train to Busan, which opened to a kw 6.5 billion collection in the country.

However, the box office number is nothing new to a Tom Cruise film. As Deadline pointed out, Cruise's 2014 action drama, Edge of Tomorrow, opened to $10.5 million in South Korea and grossed $38 million in total. Cruise's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation was a massive hit as it earned a total of $41.6 million at the South Korean box office.

The official synopsis of The Mummy says: Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The cast of The Mummy features Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella, Courtney B. Vance, Annabelle Wallis, and Jake Johnson. The movie will open in theatres in the US on June 9 2017.

This weekend, Universal's The Mummy will hit 63 overseas territories, including key markets such as China (known to be one of the biggest territories for Tom Cruise movies), the UK, Mexico, Germany, Australia, India, Brazil and Russia.
