The new Tamil release, "Thani Oruvan", has beaten a record set by SS Rajamouli's magnum opus "Baahubali" at the box office in Chennai! The Jayam Ravi and Arvind Swamy starrer has surpassed the collection of Baahubali's second weekend.

The movie had a good first weekend and raked in Rs 1.28 crore from 240 shows. In its second weekend, it collected Rs 1.06 crore to take its 10-day collection to Rs 3.35 crore.

"Baahubali" had made an earth-shattering business of Rs 1.66 crore in its opening weekend from two versions. It collected Rs 1.05 crore from 237 shows in its second weekend and ended its 10-day collection at Rs 3.84 crore at the Chennai box office.

While "Thani Oruvan" has beaten the second weekend collection of "Baahubali", it failed to surpass the 10-day business of the latter. But we have to note that "Baahubali" was released in two languages whereas the latest film has only one version (Tamil).

Nonetheless, the performance of "Thani Oruvan" has been highly appreciated by traders, who had less hopes on its box office fortunes before the release. Now, competing with a blockbuster like "Baahubali" is an achievement by itself for the film, believes the industry.

Meanwhile, "Baahubali" business has completed slowed down at Chennai box office. Last weekend, it had 24 shows and earned Rs 3.07 crore to take its total tally to Rs 8.19 crore by the end of the ninth weekend, reports Behindwoods. It has to be seen whether "Thani Oruvan" can beat this record.
