It's a hat-trick for Nitish Kumar as the JDU-RJD-Congress coalition of Grand Alliance has recorded a landslide victory in the Bihar assembly elections.

The Grand Alliance was poised to sweep a whopping 178 of the 243 seats, leaving the BJP -- which wanted to oust Nitish Kumar -- and its allies with just 58 seats.

That is, the Grand Alliance has notched up a two-thirds majority in the Bihar Assembly, a result that is the exact opposite of BJP president Amit Shah's claim made before the elections that his party would get a two-thirds majority.

Among the Mahagathbandhan allies, Janata Dal-United won 71 seats, Rashtriya Janata Dal 80 seats and Congress 27.

On the other hand the Bharatiya Janata Party could only win 53 seats, while its allies were reduced to one or two seats each. The Lok Jan Shakti Party of Ram Vilas Paswan and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party won two seats each, while Hindustani Awam Morcha secured one seat.

Interestingly, the Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist-Liberation won 3 seats, while Independents won 4 seats.

BJP ally Shiv Sena also targeted PM Modi, saying that he must take responsibility for the defeat in the Bihar polls.

Besides the Janata Dal United (JDU), the Grand Alliance also has the Congress and Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

On the other hand, the NDA consists of Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party, Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), apart from the BJP.

The overall voter turnout for the state assembly polls was recorded at 56.47% from 243 constituencies.

The RJD and the JD-U fielded 101 candidates each and the Congress 41. The BJP contested 160 seats and its allies the LJP 40, the RLSP 23 and the HAM 20 seats.

The first phase of the polls recorded 57% voter turnout from 1.35 crore voters in 49 constituencies, while the second phase had 55% polling from 86.1 lakh voters in 32 seats. The third phase had a poll percentage of 53% from 1.45 crore voters in 50 seats, the fourth phase recorded 57% turnout from 1.47 crore voters in 55 seats and the fifth phase witnessed 60% voting from 1.55 crore voters cross 57 seats.
