Shankar's magnum opus I
Shankar's magnum opus "I" was one of the biggest hits of 2015. Having released for Pongal in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, it got an earth-shattering opening worldwide but received mixed reviews. Shankar's usual suspense and thrills went missing. But it did not impact the film much at the box office as audience appreciated the commitment from the entire team behind the flick. In Chennai, it set a new benchmark by raking in around Rs 9.70 crore, little short of the magical Rs 10-crore mark.
SS Rajamouli's Baahubali
"Baahubali" was the second-biggest South Indian release after "I". It was released in both Tamil and Telugu in Chennai. The film, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati and Anushka Shetty, garnered huge appreciation from audience and critics.
The good word-of-mouth helped "Baahubali" create new records at the Chennai box office. The multilingual flick, which was distributed by Gnanavel Raja in the state, raked in above Rs 8 crore in its lifetime but failed to cross the collections of Shankar's "I".
Jayam Raja's Thani Oruvan
Jayam Raja's "Thani Oruvan" turned out to be a surprising hit at the box office. The film, starring Jayam Ravi, Arvind Swamy and Nayantara, is currently the third-biggest hit at Chennai box office. But it can be pushed down as Ajith's "Vedalam" is still being screened in the city. The thriller ended up with a total collection at Rs 6.67 crore in Chennai.
Ajith's Vedalam
Ajith's "Vedalam" became a money-spinner in the last quarter. The film, starring Ajith, Shruthi Haasan and Lakshmi Menon, released for Diwali. Even though it clashed with Kamal Haasan's "Thoongavaanam", the film performed well and emerged victorious at the collection centres.
However, unprecedented rain played spoilsport for "Vedalam" to some extent. Yet it made above Rs 6.5 crore. Else, it could have at least featured in the third position, next to "Baahubali" and "I". As the film has not completely disappeared from theatres yet, there are chances of it surpassing the collection of "Thani Oruvan".
Raghava Lawrence's Kanchana 2
Raghava Lawrence's "Kanchana" was a superhit and its sequel became an even bigger hit. The horror-thriller released to huge expectations, but nobody predicted it to become a blockbuster in Chennai. The film without an A-list actor earned Rs 6.27 crore in Chennai and it is the fifth-biggest hit the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
Ajith's Yennai Arindhaal
Ajith and Gautham Menon's "Yennai Arindhaal" was one of the most awaited films of 2015. Originally, it was supposed to release for Pongal, but as there were too many releases, this film was pushed back by a month. It helped the film to some extent as it earned above Rs 6 crore in Chennai. The movie, which got mixed reviews from the audience, became a decent hit in Thala's career.
Vijay's Puli
The biggest disappointment of 2015 was "Puli". The movie, which was expected to break records, did not live up to the expectations. In the end, it made only Rs 5.10 crore.
Sivakarthikeyan's Kaaki Sattai
Sivakarthikeyan starrer "Kaaki Sattai" is in the ninth among the top 10 hits at Chennai box office. The mass-masala film directed by Durai Senthikumar made above Rs 4.5 crore.
Anegan/Papanasam
The 10th position has been jointly shared by "Anegan" and "Papanasam". The Dhanush and Kamal Haasan-starrers have earned approximately Rs 4.40 crore in Chennai.
