The trailer of Batti Gul Meter Chalu, a film starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, released on Friday, Aug 10. Going by the title, it may seem like a fun film. From the trailer we see that it is fun, but the main story of the film revolves around a social drama on the issue of electricity cuts and over-billing due to theft in India's small towns and villages.

Revealing a lot of the plot in the film, the Batti Gul Meter Chalu trailer shows Shahid Kapoor as a carefree person until tragedy strikes. His friend (Divyendu Sharma) is upset because house has been overcharged in their current electricity bill, even though the town goes without electricity frequently.

It is a bill worth around Rs 24 lakh, and the man keeps fighting the authorities for the overbilling, until he happens to die. Shahid Kapoor's character undergoes a transformation here and he decides to fight the case.

Thankfully, the hero in Batti Gul Meter Chalu is not beating up goons but fights it out in court as a lawyer. Opposite him is a female lawyer played by Yami Gautam. After Jolly LLB 2 and the recent Mulk, we have another courtroom drama in Batti Gul Meter Chalu.

The scenes between Shahid Kapoor and Yami Gautam promise to be thrilling, while the ones with his love interest Shraddha Kapoor also are a major part of the film. Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Yami Gautam and Divyendu Sharma look like they have done a good job in the film. Shahid Kapoor especially seems in his element, and in the first half reminds you of his commercial films like R..Rajkumar and such. Shraddha Kapoor seems to have come into her own playing this rural character, while Yami Gautam is a confident and killer lawyer.

The film releases in theatres on September 21, 2018. (Batti Gul Meter Chalu had been delayed a bit due to a tussle with earlier co-producers KriArj Entertainment.)

Batti Gul Meter Chalu is written and directed by Shree Narayan Singh, who had directed Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, another film on a social issue. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Shree Narayan Singh, Nitin Chandrachud, Kusum Arora and Nishant Pitti.
