Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger Makes Contact With Real Madrid Star's Agent Over Blockbuster January Move

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly talked with Sergio Ramos' agent to discuss a potential transfer of the Spain defender from Real Madrid to the Emirates in January.

The 28-year-old defender, who completed a £20 million from Sevilla to Real Madrid in the summer of 2005, has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world, winning some crucial games for the Los Blancos including last season's Champions League final against Atletico Madrid where he scored a decisive last minute equaliser to force the game into extra time.

Despite him being an important player at Real Madrid, recent reports have indicated that Ramos could leave the Bernabeu following some unsuccessful contract talks between him and the club.

And AS journalist Manuel Esteban Manolete claims that Wenger is looking to make use of this opportunity, having already contacted the Real Madrid defender's agent and brother Rene Ramos over a potential move to Arsenal.

"Wenger has called Rene Ramos, the agent and brother of Sergio Ramos," Manolete told radio show La Goleada.

The 65-year-old Frenchman, who is desperate to sign a new defender in the winter transfer window, was recently very critical of his side's defence following Arsenal's 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the English Premier League on Sunday, insisting that the Gunners' backline lacks leadership.

"They should be talking, yes," said Wenger, when asked about the criticism from the likes of Martin Keown, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher's were justified.

"Maybe they do talk but it doesn't look like that when you look at the pictures. Of course it's important to have someone organising. You want somebody to take the leadership there."

The signing of Ramos would certainly be very beneficial to the Gunners as he is known for his leadership qualities and excellent organisational skills at the back.

Still the transfer is very unlikely as Real Madrid would definitely not want to let go of one of their best players.
