While arranged marriages are not unheard of India, an arranged marriage of frogs is certainly rare. On Monday, Assam's Jorhat district celebrated an arranged marriage of frogs to appease the Hindu god of water and the celestial ocean, Varuna.
Hundreds of people gathered at the ceremony to celebrate the wedding and pray for rains in the region.
According to a Hindu mythological belief, frogs caught and married off with traditional rituals appease Varuna. It will in turn bring rain to the region.
Farmers in Assam are facing a drought-like situation as the state has not seen rains in over a week.
Due to the lack of rains, paddy crops in the region have been the worst affected. Certain areas in Assam have not seen rainfall for over three weeks which has made the farmers resort to the traditional method to please the harbinger of rain.
