Remaking south Indian films is a trend that Bollywood is following for the past few years. The success of south remakes has led Bollywood actors to choose more such films.
The year 2014 saw several south remakes including Salman Khan's "Jai Ho" and "Kick," Akshay Kumar's "Holiday," Varun Dhawan's "Main Tera Hero" and Tiger Shroff's "Heropanti" faring well at the box office. This year too, there will be no dearth of south remakes in Bollywood.
From Arjun Kapoor's "Tevar" to Akshay Kumar's "Gabbar," check out the Hindi remakes of hit south Indian films.
Tevar
Arjun Kapoor-Sonakshi Sinha starrer "Tevar" is a remake of Telugu film "Okkadu," starring superstar Mahesh Babu.
The film is about a kabbadi player trying to save a girl from the clutches of a dangerous leader, who is in love with her and wants to marry against her wishes.
"Okkadu," which hit the screens in 2003, fared well at the box office. Following the success of the film, the action entertainer was remade in Tamil as "Gilli" with Vijay playing the lead role. The Tamil version also turned out to be a huge hit at the box office. It remains to be seen if "Tevar" will taste similar success at the box office.
The film is directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and produced by Sanjay Kapoor Entertainment and Eros International.
"Tevar" is all set to hit the screens on Friday, 9 January 2015.
Gabbar
Akshay Kumar's "Gabbar" is a remake of Tamil film "Ramanaa." The film is about a common man working towards abolishing corruption from the society.
"Ramanaa," directed by AR Murugadoss, was critically-acclaimed and commercially successful. The Telugu and the Kannada versions of the film also performed well at the box office.
In Hindi version "Gabbar," Akshay will be reprising the role played by Tamil star Vijayakanth. Shruti Haasan and Prakash Raj are also part of the film's cast. It is being directed by Telugu director Krish and jointly produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and SLB Films.
"Gabbar" is expected to hit the screens in April 2015.
Magadheera
Telugu film "Magadheera" will be remade in Hindi with Shahid Kapoor reprising the role played by Ram Charan in the original version.
Director-producer Sajid Nadiadwala has confirmed the project, which deals about re-incarnation. The film is currently in the scripting stage and is likely to go on floors this year.
Drishyam
Malayalam blockbuster flick "Drishyam" will also see a Bollywood remake soon. The family thriller flick is one of the biggest hits in the history of Malayalam cinema. The Telugu and Kannada versions were released last year and they did good business at the box office.
The Tamil version of the film "Papanasam," starring Kamal Haasan, is likely to hit the screens soon. The Hindi version will see Ajay Devgn playing the lead role, according to India Today.
Traffic
This Hindi thriller flick is being directed by Rajesh Pillai, who directed the original Malayalam version with the same name. It is about organ transplantation and is reportedly inspired from a real-life incident.
The film boasts of an ensemble cast including Manoj Bajpayee, Jimmie Shergill, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Parambrata Chaterjee and Sachin Khedekar among others.
"Traffic" is expected to hit the screens this year.
Soodhu Kavvum Remake
The Hindi remake of Tamil film "Soodhu Kavvum" was announced in 2013. According to reports, director Rohit Shetty will be helming the film which is about four misfit kidnappers. Imran Khan has been chosen to play the lead role. It is not clear as to when the film will go on floors.
Besides these films, there is a lot of buzz about other south projects including Telugu film "Attarintiki Daaredi" and Tamil film "Kaththi" being remade in Hindi, though there is no official announcement about it.
