Several Android smartphone users are still on the lookout for the latest software update, which is said to bring major improvements and tweaks. The newest Android 5.1 Lollipop was rolled out to major Nexus devices last month but some users were kept waiting. Nexus 4 owners were among them but Google is slowly pushing out the update to its 2012 flagship via the traditional OTA route. The rollout is happening in a phased manner and users might receive the Android 5.1 on Nexus 4 devices in the coming days or weeks.

According to Gotta Be Mobile, Google will complete the Android 5.1 rollout by the end of April. The update is mainly focused on fixing known issues found in the original Lollipop OS but also brings some new features to enhance users' experience.

Changelog for Nexus 4:

Google introduced new Quick Settings menu, which can be accessed by swiping the notification bar twice, or once with two fingers. This will allow users to access screen brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, flashlight, airplane mode, auto rotate, location or GPS, screen casting and more.

The Android 5.1 also brings major development to the security of the device, which renders the handset useless if stolen or lost. With the Device Protection feature, it is impossible for anyone to change the original user's login credentials even by factory resetting the device.

Finally, the update also improves voice calls with HD Voice feature.

How to update?

Google did not release the factory image of Android 5.1 Lollipop for Nexus 4 devices. Users must get the new software by going into the device's Settings > About Phone and System Updates. The OTA file weighs 174.5MB and it is highly recommended users connect to Wi-Fi before proceeding.

However, if users haven't received the update notification yet, they can also sideload it directly from Google's servers. Thanks to a Reddit user EggChaser, there's an OTA file to download and install on your Nexus device. If you are unaware how to sideload the file, follow Gotta Be Mobile's step-by-step guide.
