It's been only a few days since the new Google's MR (Maintenance Release) Android 5.1 got released to Nexus devices to fix bugs; now it has come to light that the latest update has failed to rectify the memory leak glitch.

Android 5.0 was released in mid-November to Nexus devices, but soon early adopters noticed some glaring bugs in the new OS. Google was quick to acknowledge and released a couple of stability updates v5.0.1 and v5.0.2. But the updates, probably half-baked, failed to fix the bugs and came out with more glitches including memory leak bug (detected after v5.0.1 update), which caused certain apps to hog phone's RAM memory leading to sudden app crashes.

This apparently forced Google to go back to the drawing board to re-work on the source codes and last week, it began deploying the new major MR (Maintenance Release) v5.1 Lollipop update to Nexus and Android One devices.

Now, Nexus device owners who just got upgraded to the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop have complained that the nagging memory leak bug is still present and is wrecking phone's performance as all the RAM space is being devoured by a handful of apps.

A Nexus 5 user (jlmcr...@gmail.com) has opened thread on Google's official AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Issue Tracker, complaining that Android 5.1 Lollipop has failed to fix the memory leak bug.

"After one day of usage the free ram down to 800 mb and I can see google+ restarting... Without reseting the phone, it returns automaticaly to 1.1 gb free ram. All this happen without opening or changing any app, what proves the memory leak," he said.

Another Nexus 5 user, going by the moniker Ankur, had this to say: "Yes, Memory leak is still present for me too. System memory usage shot up to 750 MB just after 30 hours of up time. Google+ has restarted itself couple of times."

The good news is that Google has official acknowledged the bug in Android 5.1 Lollipop and it has actually fixed the aforementioned bug during the internal testing and has promised to release another update, probably v5.1.1 soon.

"This (understood to be Memory Leak bug) has been fixed internally. We do not currently have a timeline for public release," said al...@android.com, a Google Project Member.

The company has not announced any time of release as such, but we believe Google might begin rolling out the update by March end or early April.
