Aamir Khan's recent statement on "growing intolerance" in India has raised many eyebrows, including in Bollywood.

The actor started trending on Twitter and there has been a series of anti and pro-Aamir Khan comments. Veteran actor Anupam Kher joined the debate, vehemently opposing Aamir's views through a series of tweets.

During the eighth edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards ceremony, Aamir said rising intolerance in India has made his wife Kiran Rao fear for her child and has prompted her to consider leaving India.

The statement triggered a controversy, with mixed responses from all corners.

Anupam Kher, in his tweets, said there have been "worse" times in India but Aamir never thought of shifting to any other country. He also pointed that this country has made Aamir the star he is today, and he should try to spread hope instead of fear.

Meanwhile, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya also joined in the Twitter war and opposed Aamir's comments with some relatively harsh tweets.

In one of his tweets, Abhijeet also asked Aamir to leave India and retweeted a number of anti-Aamir comments.

Noted filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma targeted Aamir with a series of tweets stressing that a nation that made three Khans the superstars that they are today can never be labelled "intolerant".

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor also reacted to Aamir's comment, suggesting that running away from a problem is not the solution.

Actress Raveena Tandon did not name anyone, but clearly expressed her disagreement with Aamir's statement and hinted on a political angle.

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta chipped in, but apparently in favour of Aamir Khan. He also asked people to watch Aamir's full interview before jumping to any conclusion.

Shirish Kunder apparently expressed his support for the actor.

Kamaal R Khan also asked people to understand the reason behind Aamir's statement.

But he also agreed with Ram Gopal Varma's view.
