Xiaomi Announces New Redmi 2 Variant with 2GB RAM

It's been only a few weeks since Xiaomi launched the flagship mid-range smartphone Redmi 2 (on 4 January, 2015). Now the company has reportedly announced a new variant of the Redmi 1S successor.

Last week, a report surfaced online that a new Redmi 2 model had been certified at TENNA, a Chinese government owned telecommunication certification commission. But the rumour met a quick death as many believed that the company would not launch a new variant while original model is less than a month old in the market.

However, to everyone's surprise, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun (via official Weibo site) has announced the launch of new Redmi 2 model. Sans a couple of features, the exterior body design and most of the internal hardware is almost identical to its sibling. Only difference is that it houses 2GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt memory, whereas the original variant ships with1GB physical memory and 8GB storage space.

The company is yet to announce the price and availability details of refurbished Redmi 2 model.

Now, it remains to be seen how the fans who have purchased Redmi 2  (with 1GB RAM), would react to company's dubious strategy to announce a new model in space of few weeks of release of the original variant.

The original Xiaomi Redmi 2 pre-order service went live on 4 January and got released on 9 January in China for ¥699 (around $113/€94/₹7,120).
